General Permit Information

Overview

Generally, you need to obtain a building permit from the City whenever you construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, remove, improve, convert, or demolish a building or other structure. A building could be anything from a tool shed, a house, or a commercial structure. The projects requiring a building permit are listed in the Fee Schedule. A permit may also be required for repair or installation of work involving plumbing, mechanical, or electrical. Additionally, code violations are generally required to obtain a permit to correct property maintenance issues. The review of the plan may take up to 30 days or more. The payment for a permit can made on-line via credit card (except American Express), cash, or a check (payable to the City of Bristol). If there are certain unpaid taxes or liens on the property, a permit will not be issued.
